Place is amazing, there was a herd of bison not a 2 minute walk away from the campground and we did a little half hour hike up the hills amd around the campground and the view was amazing.
The area is mostly utilized by tent campers, but there was a smattering of trailers there as well.
Well maintained vault toilets in spite of probably 100 people using them for the 2 days we were camped in this area. Lots of space. Closest water is at the main entrance to the park at least an hour away.
Okay this is a primitive site, so be aware. It also took us down 15+ miles of unadopted roads to get to the site, so your cars covered in dust and chipped with gravel. When we got there, this place was in the desert, it was 115 that day and incredibly windy. You can't light a stove, hard to pitch a tent and it'll blow away if not pegged down a lot!!! Its does have two new toilets, covering holes with a lot of flies and it has some tables and that's it. Bring a lot of water, we went through two gallons in the time we were there. There's no ranger, no organization, no rules, people were cramming themselves in at 11pm and dropping a tent anywhere. Noisy until 12pm with zero camp rules around keeping quiet after 10pm. It was barren, walks went no-where and not at all a camping experience I'd repeat. No campfires allowed, so no cooking, but its free so I guess that's why it gets 4.8 stars.
Bison roam the hills and primarily stay outside of camp, but a couple wandered through. Very interesting experience - but remember to respect their space.
There are no trees. It was very warm and dry when we were there the end of June - but much cooler at night. There are a number of covered picnic tables - but not nearly as many as there are people. Plan to bring your own table and shade if you can.
Sage Creek in Badlands is the most majestic place I've ever camped. It takes a long time to drive to but if you're patient, the scenery and wildlife are very much worthwhile. Sit outside, look at stars, prairie dogs and buffalo.
Absolutely beautiful semi - primatve camp. Pit toilets available. Picture perfect. Solitude except for Bison, mule deer, big horn sheep, and coyote.
Perfect for a weekend! Free camping spot and there's a toilet with toilet paper (no light though). Also no shower.
